What is Flood Modelling?

Flood modelling plays a crucial role in flood risk assessment, disasters, land use planning, and the design of flood protection infrastructure. By providing insights into how floods may impact communities and the environment, flood modelling helps companies make informed decisions to mitigate flood risk and improve resilience.
Analysing various components such as rainfall intensity, topography, land use, soil type and drainage systems to predict how water will fall, accumulate and spread during a flood.

What does it involve?

• Data Collection: Gathering relevant data such as topographic maps, land use maps, rainfall data, river flow data, and information about infrastructure like dams and levees.
• Pre-processing: Cleaning and organising the collected data for use in the model.
• Model Selection: Choosing an appropriate flood modelling approach based on factors such as the scale of the area being studied, the level of detail required, and the available computational resources.
• Model Calibration: Adjusting the parameters of the chosen model to better match observed data from past flooding events. Calibration helps improve the accuracy of the model’s predictions.
