Porosity / Inclusion Analysis - OR3D

Porosity and Inclusion Analysis

A technique that utilises CT data to measure the amount of distribution of pores or inclusions in a material.

What is Porosity and Inclusion Analysis?

Porosity and Inclusion Analysis is a technique that utilises CT data to measure the amount and distribution of pores or inclusions in a material.

Porosity Analysis can provide information around the quality, density, and strength of a material, as well as its potential defects or flaws. Porosity Analysis can be applied to various materials, such as metals, ceramics, composites, or plastics, and understanding the distribution or shape of porosity can help to provide understanding of potential issues in the manufacturing process. Once the location of the pores has been determined we can check to see how far they are from the parts surface and if they will be removed in a future machining process.

Inclusion Analysis works in a similar way to Porosity Analysis however, its purpose is to find inclusions within a material. It is common to add additional materials to a product to increase its strength. Inclusion analysis can be used to better understand how these particles have propagated around the sample.

OR3D CT offers porosity and inclusion analysis services using RX Solutions CT systems to scan with high resolution and accuracy to generate 3D models and reports that show the porosity characteristics of the scanned objects.

Analytical Information

Numerical data can be generated from a Porosity Analysis. This allows direct comparisons between parts on the type of porosity that has been detected. A sample of the types of information that can be extracted from porosities has been listed below.

Diameter
XYZ location
Volume
Surface area
Sphericity
